Here you will find Twacks Unique Perspective… This is the beginning of a category that will give me license to talk about whatever I like and all under the guise of my own unique perspective. Initially, I have to be a good boy and talk about relevant things, affiliate marketing, websites, niches, content and so forth but inevitably I will move onto the more…ummm…let’s say, interesting subjects..Who knows where that will lead.
I could have done an Introduction page but I would have probably used up all the good stuff… So a paragraph or two here will have to suffice. Twacks Unique Perspective On Affiliate Marketing-Like it, write it, sell it… ‘The Dummies Guide’, ‘Affiliate Marketing 101’, ‘An Easy Understanding of…’, ‘How To…’ and so on and so on… I don’t think so.
Looking for a serious, technical and insightful write-up on what affiliate marketing is ? Well, look no further…kidding. I’m not going to do that. There must a million or more websites, books, articles and videos on how to become an online affiliate. Written and produced by experienced and serious people far more qualified than I. Saying that, when I started out, I had no idea what an affiliate marketeer was…yet here I am.
According the one of the many, growing, branches of Wiki… Affiliate Marketing is:
“Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts.”
OK. Does that hep you ? No, I didn’t think so… How about this one then, from ‘Investopedia.com’
“Affiliate marketing is an advertising model where a company pays compensation to third-party publishers they generate traffic or leads to the company’s products and services.”
Gettting better..possibly. Last one, I promise. This is from ‘entrepreneur.com’:
“A way for a company the sell its products by signing up individuals or companies (“affiliates”) who market the company’s products for a commission.”
Finally, one that actually makes some sense. When I read the last one it makes me think, in simple terms of course, about ‘Salespeople’…back in the late eighties I had a number of friends who started out working for companies as part of their sales force. They would buy a couple of suits and go boldly out into the world and try the sell the companies products…. Hard, soul-destroying work, for some.
Most of the time they would be paid a small ‘basic’ salary but would also get ‘commission’ and bonuses, directly proportional to the sales they made. If they were unlucky, it was just commission. Either way, it was a hard way to earn a living…especially if you weren’t ‘cut from the right cloth’… Selling, face to face isn’t for everyone. It certainly wasn’t for me.
Moving With The Times
Is making the comparison a disservice to the modern day online marketeer ? Yes, I would say it is. It has to be said though, that within any industry there will always be those who are…how should we say…unscrupulous…yes, I like that word…those who will try the sell you something you don’t need or a product that is less than ‘fit for purpose’… That is the same right the way across the board…so let’s not tar all with the same brush…moving on now.
Nowadays you go into a shop and if you’re lucky, you will be served by a very helpful sales ‘assistant’ who will take you by the hand and guide you through the process of buying. Knowledgeable and pleasant, the assistant gently maneuvers you into the right department/aisle, you find exactly what you need and happily go to the till and purchase. Yay.
In many ways that is what an affiliate marketeer does..well, the good ones, at least. Only, they do it through their website.
High Street To Highway
Sad though it may be to some…the ‘High Street’ is no longer what it once was. Everything is ‘Online’ and all your favourite storesare lined up on the Internet Super-Highway rather than a street. Sometimes both, although they haven’t managed to serve coffee through your screen yet. It used to be the case that you knew what you wanted the buy so went into town, had a look round a few shops and bought whatever it was you needed. Your choice may have been based on price alone or a number of factors. Then you went home.
Nowadays you may well still go into town but only to look…then go home and buy online…that is normally down to the price concerns…sometimes availability…mainly price.
So now you have a million and more online shops, all trying the sell to you…you can go directly there, pick what you want, buy it and wait for it the come through you door. So what’s missing ? The sales assistant, that’s what. Someone who can give you advice or answer those questions you never thought to ask.
Your Digital Assistant
This is where, I think, affiliate marketeers’ fit. In you computer….it’s a bit tight…they don’t mind a bit of discomfort though. Back to the definition but in my terms. Someone who gets a commission for selling someone else’s product… Basic I know but it pretty much sums it up.
They are your digital assistant. There to help and assistant in the facilitation of your purchase. I can see you’re not quite on the same page as me yet… I’ll try harder and you try and get up to speed.
Let’s say, for instance, that I have set up a website all about 80s pop music…like that would ever happen…. I love that era ofmusic and have created a site all about it…Who was Top of The Pops ?…all the characters..all the awesome hairstyles…different genres..etc etc etc…. I might have written a review on…er. Duran Duran….stay with me.
Now, by some from of happenstance you have arrived on my site as you were ‘reminiscing’ and thinking about all those really great fashion styles that were around back then…. You see the review about one of you favourite groups and start reading…such fond memories…on that page is an ‘affiliate link’ that will take you to an online store that sells the entire back catalogues of CD’s….”I haven’t listened to Simon Le bon for years”….before you know it, you’re on the other website buying a couple of greatest hits discs….couple ?
That’s how it works…the simple version… Your digital assistant is the one providing you with the knowledge and expertise in the area you are interested in.
Do You Know What You Want ?
At this point I’m thinking I could just go on and on about the different aspects of affiliate marketing. You’d get bored and click off and go some place else… I wouldn’t blame you…so I’ll add a couple more things and we’ll be done. This is only meant to be a brief ‘taster’ of what it’s all about.
You read all this and say to yourself… “Why don’t I just pop over to Amazon and buy whatever it is I want ?”…Fair question and that’s what plenty of us do, most of the time…as long as we know exactly what it is we want. That’s not always the case though. We may be unsure of a brand or a design or even a type… Take bicycles… that’s a massive market place. Where would you even begin ? What about a toaster…. I know it sounds daft but name one, right now….waiting….See, not straightforward.
So you use Google and start having a scan through some sites that offer information and reviews… One of these sites will give you the information you weren’t sure about or even didn’t know you needed…all going to plan and you end up at Amazon anyway…this time you’ve done it by going through someones’ website and that’s the crux of it all, right there.
Write It Like It Sell It.
There are many variations of a theme, as we well know. I like my little heading as a way of thinking about affiliate marketing from a marketeers’ perspective… You write it, they like it, you sell it. Sounds simple and it is…up to a point. If you just have a site with a few pictures and a paragraph saying “Buy this, it’s great”… That’s not going the work. I’m not saying you have to be an expert either. Well thought out and researched articles are what we are all after when it comes down to it.
Like I said…or didn’t…there is much more to this than meets the eye. Plenty of different ways of doing it. In simple terms, you get a ‘slice if the pie’ selling someone else’s products. The benefits are that you never see the physical product. You are redirecting the customer. You’re like the hotel concierge. There are literally thousands of companies out there that have affiliate schemes in place. You reach out, sign up and away you go. That’s a whole article right there… Who to choose and why, one product or many, lesser known or well-known. In many ways that will come down to you and who you would like to affiliate yourself with.
The concept is very simple. Being successful in today’s highly competitive marketplace is less so. There is always something new to learn. I am learning every day and will probably continue to do so forever more.
