How many more episodes are there, I hear you cry. Well, Twacks Way a blogging bonanza is a mini-episode, as we’re just going to be covering blogging. Words and stuff. How I blog, what I blog, why I blog. All that good stuff.
It has to be said though, writing within the Wealthy Affiliate is much easier than when you come to write on your own website. You have more of a ‘free-rein’ over the subject matter.
The other side of that shiny coin is that your audience is much better qualified to make judgement on your work. That’s sounds mean. They don’t ‘judge’ per se, it’s more that they have a huge amount of expertise in that area. There are also plenty out there, just like me, no experience and ‘winging it’
My First Blog
So my first blog. Ummmh, not the best but how was I to know. One hundred and eighty-four words, no paragraphs and one image. No wonder I only had three comments and one of those was someone asking a question about something totally unrelated to my blog. There again, any response could have been unrelated and I wouldn’t have minded.
It’s a bit like having to stand up and speak in front of a group of people, for the very first time. It’s actually easier in some ways. No one is right there in front of you. Anyway hear it is for posterity.
See what I mean ? I put this hear so you can see where I began. It was written and published on January 22nd 2019. The very same day that I started my free membership. Talk about jumping in both feet first. The two comments I had that were genuine, were kind words of encouragement, both from members in the ‘Top 100’ in fact the one is now an ‘Ambassador’ which is ‘Top 25’ That’s what I was talking about in one of my other posts. The membership hear is more than willing to take the time to comment and help wherever they see fit.
Have I Got Anything To Say ?
Three websites and over eighty blogs on the WA platform, looks like I did have something to say. Not sure everyone was best pleased, my next blog was a bit longer at 225 words but only one person commented. That didn’t matter though. It was early days, I was a ‘newbie’ and it took time to work out what you should write so that others would enjoy it. Actually, that’s not really how I do things. I mean, you can, if you want and even now I read some blogs and you can tell they are ‘viewer friendly’
Just not my style. I might be out walking the dogs and a thought will pop into my grey matter and by the time I get home I’ll have a roughed out blog ready to put into the ether. Maybe that’s why, even now, I seem to be lacking in comments, not all the time but now and then. Certainly keeps the ego in check.
Who Are You Writing For.
This follows nicely on. Who are you writing for ? I think this is an important point. If you are solely writing for yourself, thenreally, what is the point ? It’s all in your head anyway, so you don’t need to write it out. If you are solely writing for someone else then how are you going to manage to please everyone, does that make sense ? I have written, what I consider, really good blogs and hardly anyone has even said ‘Hi’. That used to make me sad, not really sad, just a small downturn at the edge of my mouth.
So it has to be a bit of both, in my humble opinion. However, you write, you’re not going to please everyone. That’s the ‘double-edged sword’. I messaged one of the boss men, to try to find out if there was a way of scheduling the blogs, so the biggest audience had it at the best time. No can do. That taught me a lesson though. One of the owners messaged me and just said “Don’t over think it” So now I don’t. I just write and hope that someone out there enjoys it.
Why Are You Writing.
This, I think is more interesting. Why are you writing ? If it’s just for the sake of it, don’t bother. Mike Oldfield, him of Tubular Bells fame, said “I’d rather play one note with feeling than a whole scale without” or words close enough. For the first three months of your Premium membership you only get one blog per day. This worked two ways for me. I wanted to blog every day, if I could, plus I wanted to make my contribution worthwhile. Still, no point in writing for the sake of it.
Everyone is different in their approach. Some will just do a few well-chosen lines, while others will give you a thousand plus words of interesting information. It may be to do with the business side of the platform, it may more along the motivational side. I could never bring myself to write just a couple of lines, seemed like a waste time. I did a couple of blogs about ‘spammers’ which, like any other site, you get from time to time. I begrudged doing it, even though I knew it was for the greater good.
I just went with whatever came into my head and tried to write in the most entertaining way I could. Much of the time I was a bit ‘Out there’ and although it was generally received with good grace there were a few comments along the lines of ‘Liked what you wrote but not sure if I got your meaning’ That’s OK, I didn’t always have a point or meaning. One of my blogs was entitled “What Experts Are Saying About Croutons” Feel free to check it out. What was all that about ? well obviously croutons but I have no idea what possessed me to write it. Sometimes you just have to go with it and see where the ‘flow’ takes you.
Can’t Stop Blogging.
I really can’t, no really, I can’t stop blogging. It’s infectious or contagious, one or the other. When you write something and put it out there you get a sense of achievement, even when there isn’t much response. My level of content went down as soon as I started building the websites but I’m still adding a few hear and there consistently. That helps, consistency, getting yourself out there, being seen on a regular basis.
After a while you will find your ‘place’. I mean your style. Somewhere along the way it just clicks. Then the rest just falls into place. I like to write as I talk, sort of. It’s hard to describe. I’m not always grammatically correct but then I don’t always speak in the most correct fashion. My sister once said that when I actually did get round to writing her a letter, she enjoyed reading it because it was as if I was there, having a conversation in person. That kind of stuck with me, so I’ve tried over time to continue with that style.
Google Likes A WA Blog.
That’s right, I didn’t know it at first but Google and the ‘search engines’ likes blogs hear at Wealthy Affiliate. Everything we publish hear gets ‘crawled’ by them, as in they check it out now and then. There’s plenty to learn about how the internet finds your work and ranks it. Far more than I understand currently. The training puts you in good stead though. Now and then its worth checking out the search engines and putting in a few of your title words. ‘Metal Pecker with Blind Determination’ Check this one out. One of my more inspired ‘random’ blogs, is on page two of Ecosia and Bing, not sure where it is on Google but hey, you can’t have it all.
Wealthy Affiliate is an ‘Authority’ site and has ‘Trust’ so is highly recognised by the search engines. So don’t think that your work will only be seen by fellow members,no, it can be seen by the WWW. That’s food for thought.
There’s Blogging And There’s Blogging.
So I was about to wrap all this up and it occurred to me that I may have been remiss about something. I kind of touche on itat the start but now that’s only apparent with hindsight. There may be some confusion with the term ‘Blogging’. In the context of this article I am referring to the specific blog facility at Wealthy Affiliate. Not to be confused with ‘blogging’ where you might have your own website. I mean you can have your own sites at WA and write to your hearts content about anything you want. Your passion, your hobby, your pets, your car or whatever you want. That would be a ‘Niche’ and we’ll get to that at a later stage.
One thing you can do though, is use your blog at WA to try things out. Write about different subjects, in diverse styles, factual or fictional. You can hone your craft to see what works. That way, your website content will always be awesome, well that’s the theory.
Now I am going to wrap it up. Write, write and write some more. Just thoughts put down as words and all yours.
