Welcome to yet another installment…this time we’re on Twacks Way Getting To Know You. I know it’s not the most imaginative title but I’m cautious of overextending myself…there are many many more posts to come, so I don’t want to use up all the good ones at the start. Early days at WA is exactly what it is though, a chance to share with you how I started out at wealthy Affiliate as a Premium Member.
Like anything new, the early days are always a bit nervy…finding your feet, so to speak. Scary is another word for it. There is plenty going on and there are fellow members who have been on the site for years…so I certainly needed to tread carefully. Who am I kidding…. You just have to get out there and do it…come what may.
Meet And Greet
It has to be said, in all honesty, I have never come across a platform where everyone is so openly friendly… I’ve been on a few Forums here and there and when you join there’s normally a section for new members to ‘Say Hi’. I’ve done my bit…popped a comment up and a bit of a description as to why I’m there… Responses ? Maybe three or four..six tops.
Well here..oh at Wealthy Affiliate, the response to new members is ‘through the roof’ almost literally. Why ? Well, I think it’s all about ‘networking’…never thought I’d hear myself write that…you know what I mean. Everyone who joins is recommended to have a profile picture and a bit of a ‘Bio’ just a paragraph or two about yourself. Whenever you’re out and about on the site and you leave a comment…your image is there for all to see. That’s mine below…lovely.Basically, if you click on the image you get taken to that persons profile page and can read a bit about them. If you like what you see you can opt to ‘Follow’ them.
Like many other platforms the ‘Follow’ concept is a way of building your own ‘network’… For your own benefit it means that anyone who follows you back will be able to see any of your blogs. The reverse is also true. You can set up your ‘notifications’ so that whenever someone you are following, ‘posts’ anything you get a message to that effect.
It’s a win win situation. Like I said at the start, the community is there to help in any way, shape or form that they can. My profile page has literally hundreds of comments form other members just saying ‘Hi’ and wishing me all the best.
All this was very new to me but I was in for the long haul and as they say “When in Rome…” The more people you have in you network the more exposure your work gets. You can write the most stunning post but if no one sees it…. You get the idea. The ratio, for me, works out to approximately two to one… Every two members I follow, one follows me back. There’s no law to say you have to follow someone if they follow you, it’s all about choice.
Networking The Right Way
I am polite…no, really I am. If I’m going to follow someone I will have a look at their ‘Bio’ first. If you hover over their image a window opens with a snippet of their bio so you can get an idea without having to leave your place. This, to me, was the right way to build a network. Obviously I couldn’t make them follow me back, I would hope they would do that if they read my profile and maybe enjoyed some of the blogs I’ve written.
That’s networking 101 I suppose. I have read, on good authority, that on some other ‘nameless’ platforms, that some build a massive following and yet feel none of the ‘love’ that should come with having a huge following..click and move on..click and move on. That’s not how it works at WA. There’s a feeling of ‘Paying it Forward’ that runs deep through the digital veins of the platform… That comes from the top and filters out to the furthest reaches of all the members.
You want a network that is full of people who are genuinely interested in you and that you feel the same. I look forward to my e-mails to see who’s been posting so I can have a read of something that I know I will enjoy… They might be just posting to let everyone know of their latest achievement… The thing is, they’re not posting to ‘big’ themselves up..it’s more to show that whatever it is ‘can be done’…’ Look, if I can do this, so can you.”
The WA Circle Of Life
It’s probably more like me to be going round in circles and not WA but there is some semblance of truth in the heading. I actually have a blog waiting in the wings about how the platform itself is a representation of a ‘website’ and how you try to make it successful…but that’s for another post and another day.
Anyway, back to the script…or ‘ad lib’ which is closer to the truth. As a newcomer you are very much reliant on others coming to you and they do, in droves. That way, you are put at ease right from the start. This is important because it’s all new and can be overwhelming. So you start by following those who have made contact with you on your profile. If you’ve commented on someones’ blog and they have replied, you follow them. Slowly but surely you start to build your own network. Then when you start to interact more, you will reach more people. The more you network, the greater number of members will get to see your posts or blogs. The greater reach you have the more likely you are going to get comments…that makes you feel good and more likely to keep creating content…aaaah yes…creating content…The better the content…the more comments, the more followers and the circle continues.
Wasn’t sure I was going to pull that off, for a while there.
Active In All Areas
The more you’re active the more you’re seen..followed..you get it. This is mean to sound like all you’re after is a big network. Remember how I said earlier it ‘s about building it the proper way. Every time you interact with someone, you are making a connection. You may not remember every single one but some you will because that person resonates with you. You’ll find that they will keep popping up here and there. You’ll probably do the same in regard to their work….now we’re working it.
We’ll come to ‘posts’ or ‘blogs’ another time, they deserve a page all to themselves. As a new member, even when you’re Premium, you can only blog once a day… That’s enough for the most part, believe me.
Then there is ‘Live Chat’…which is exactly what you’d expect it to be….24/7 live chat…Sssh but that really hasn’t been my thing… I’m to slow on the keyboard… By the time I’ve read the message and got round to replying, a dozen more messages have been and gone and I have to scroll back down to find the original…normally someone else has replied by then. Still, I’m sure plenty of you are far more at home on that medium than I am.
Live chat is an excellent place to get instant answers, as long as there is someone on there at the same time…and providing they know the answer. It’s not all about questions though, some do just ‘chat’. So it can be a great place to meet like-minded members.
Well, believe it or not, we have just covered the very basics and start of building a ‘presence’ at Wealthy Affiliate. I mean, that’s not how you might think you’ll get started, I didn’t. Once you have taken your first steps you’ll find it sweeps you up and away…. I was not ‘out there’ in internet land..by any stretch of the imagination… I was ‘Social Media Inept’…I could barely answer my phone.
Now look at me… I’m all over the place…
As always, I thank you for your time and if you want to leave a comment or question please feel free to do so below.
